The origination for Cinco de Mayo, “The Fifth of May”, commemorates the conquering of the French army by the Mexicans at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is mainly a regional holiday rejoiced and respected in the state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but not as much in other parts of Mexico. Being that California is the melting pot it is, we all need a reason to celebrate, here’s one.
Ay Yi Yi! What to do the Saturday after you smash your face with margaritas and tacos for cinco de mayo? Well, Come to the City of Santa Monica’s Cinco de Mayo Festival on Sunday May 6th from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. at Virginia Avenue Park.
The best place to be with friends and family! Enter your best salsa recipe in the Homemade Salsa Tasting Contest, play Lotería and win prizes, or participate in the Traditional Fashion Contest, and kids will enjoy playing games, rides and making crafts! This year’s festival will feature live entertainment with the salsa music of Bombachanté, the mariachi band Alta California de Carlos Villalobos, and a Folklórico dance performance by Herencia Mexicana. Master of Ceremonies and performance artist, Maria Elena Gaitan brings interesting and humorous commentary on the historical significance of this cultural celebration.
Obviouslly, no Cinco de Mayo event would be complete without artisan vendors and traditional Mexican foods and delicious treats!
